Oh my goodness! Unless you are a Tree of Life developer, you really shouldn't be here. This page is part of our beta test site, where we develop new features for the ToL, often messing up a thing or two in the process. Please visit the official version of this page, which is available here.

Martialia hyadesi: Original description

Paul G. K. Rodhouse

The original description lists the date as 1887 but it was not actually published until 1889. The original species description was in Latin and was followed by a French version. The following is an English translation of the French version of the original text. The entire original manuscript (as a pdf document) can be found here. document iconView Rochebrune & Mabille 1889

7. Martialia hyadesi Rochebrune and Jules Mabille, 1887.

Thick elongated body, quadrangular and smooth. Body ends in a lozenge shaped fin, much wider than deep and sharply extended into a point, with thick lateral extremities divided below, at its point of insertion, with a heart-shaped depression width-ways. Thick sessile arms, relatively short, joined together with a thin flopppy membrane edged on each side with thick, soft conical, tentacle-like trabeculae; two rows of suckers arranged alternatively; lower suckers wide, sub-sessile rounded, armed on the periphery with long sharp teeth and with short quadrangular denticles (between teeth?). The suckers at the ends of the arms are small, ovoid, held on long filiforme stalks, inserted outside the preceding suckers at the base of the marginal trabeculae and armed with long sharp teeth only on their anterior external edge. Horn-shaped flexible gladius equal to the length of the body and in the shape of a feather. This is an animal of intense red-violet colour on all its dorsal surface and of a pale violet ventrally. The arms are equally violet on the dorsal surface and dirty yellow beneath.
