Oh my goodness! Unless you are a Tree of Life developer, you really shouldn't be here. This page is part of our beta test site, where we develop new features for the ToL, often messing up a thing or two in the process. Please visit the official version of this page, which is available here.

Introduction

Mendoncia is one of five genera in Thunbergioideae, comprising ca. 60 species distributed mainly in Central and South America with some African representatives and a few species native to Madagascar.

Discussion of Phylogenetic Relationships

To date, there is no comprehensive subgeneric taxonomic treatment of Mendoncia. Some species have earlier been ascribed to two separate genera; Monachochlamys and Afromendoncia. Due to the lack of sufficient divergent characters, both genera were sunk back into Mendoncia by Benoist (1944), and recent DNA analyses show that neither Monachochlamys nor Afromendoncia are monophyletic (Borg et al. 2008). Relationships within Mendoncia correspond well to the geographic distribution of the genus. The genus displays a trans-Atlantic disjunction, with one clade consisting of species endemic to Madagascar, which is sister to a large group consisting of one African mainland clade and an entirely American clade.

This page is a Tree of Life Branch Page.

Each ToL branch page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a branch of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a branch and a leaf of the Tree of Life is that each branch can be further subdivided into descendent branches, that is, subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
