Oh my goodness! Unless you are a Tree of Life developer, you really shouldn't be here. This page is part of our beta test site, where we develop new features for the ToL, often messing up a thing or two in the process. Please visit the official version of this page, which is available here.

Containing group: Acantheae

Introduction

Crossandrella is a West African genus of two species.  These plants are unique among Acantheae in having beaked capsules that crack transversely at maturity.  Although our molecular data place Crossandrella as part of the Schlerochiton clade, other characters suggest other affinities.  For example, with Cynarospermum, Blepharis, Acanthopsis and the Acanthus clade, plants of Crossandrella share the four-lobed, "fused, sheathing, reduced" calyx.  In contrast, with Sclerochiton and some species of Crossandra, plants of Crossandrella share remarkable pollen that is shaped rather like a Toblerone chocolate bar:  triangular in polar view, elongate in equatorial view, and with open areas (caveae) at the 'points' of the triangle.  In sum, Crossandrella presents a mosaic of characters that do not permiit an entirely satisfactory placement of the genus.

This page is a Tree of Life Leaf Page.

Each ToL leaf page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a leaf at the tip of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a leaf and a branch of the Tree of Life is that a leaf cannot generally be further subdivided into subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
