Scientific Name Cryphonectria parasitica
Location Pendleton County, West Virginia, USA
Comments Cryphonectria parasitica is a filamentous ascomycete that produces two spore stages: sexual (perfect) and asexual (imperfect). The sexual spore stage of the fungus is represented by ascospores produced within asci borne in flask-shaped perithecia embedded in stromata of chestnut blight cankers. During and shortly after rain events, the ascospores are forcibly expelled from the perithecia via the ostiole. Ascospores may persist on moist bark and foliage however their viability significantly decreases with exposure to high temperature and/or rapid drying.
