This tree diagram shows the relationships between several groups of organisms.

The root of the current tree connects the organisms featured in this tree to their containing group and the rest of the Tree of Life. The basal branching point in the tree represents the ancestor of the other groups in the tree. This ancestor diversified over time into several descendent subgroups, which are represented as internal nodes and terminal taxa to the right.

You can click on the root to travel down the Tree of Life all the way to the root of all Life, and you can click on the names of descendent subgroups to travel up the Tree of Life all the way to individual species.

The monophyly of several cockroach families and subfamilies is doubtful, and the relationships among cockroach lineages are still very much debated. One of the most controversial issues is the position of the genus Cryptocercus, which has generally been considered an isolated lineage most closely related to blattid cockroaches (e.g., McKittrick 1964, Kambhampati 1996, Klass 1997, 2001). Grandcolas (1994), however, argues that Cryptocercus is derived from within the Polyphagidae.

Introduction

Under bark, or logs, some are arboreal, some live in caves; others in bathtubs and behind bookcases. Some are omnivores; others eat wood.

Upper Carboniferous to Recent. One of the dominant groups of the late Palaeozoic.
